In my growing up years, I don’t know from where I picked this one line which I thought made me look very cool.

My brain’s like a sieve

Looking back, I don’t know how cool it made me look, but saying it over and over certainly damaged my memory quite badly.

I have hence learnt the importance of using our super computer brain cautiously to say the least, so that we don’t end of digging our own grave.

Tanav and I recently did a discussion about the techniques to use to memorize things or words so that we never forget it ever. Here’s it is:

This discussion and these learning hacks are based on a book I recently read, “Hidden Secrets of a Super Learner” by an ex-colleague Bhowmick Sen. Available at Amazon and highly recommended for students (all ages), their parents and teachers.

The best part about these techniques is that they’re not just super effective at facilitating learning but are also so much fun too.

I’m learning a lot using these techniques. For example, I noted a new word, called inter alia yesterday, which meant among other things.

Now that would have been easily forgotten in few hours, but then I made a little story using the KIT-KAT technique mentioned in the book. It means that if you don’t know the word, break it down and then weave a story around that. Here’s the application to remember the meaning:

Inter Alia sounds like Integer and Alia (Bhatt)

Integers, Rational numbers, whole numbers, natural numbers among other things are concepts that Alia would never understand.

Well, with all due respect to Alia, she’s usually been the butt of jokes around her learning and general knowledge skills, so this one sits well for me to never forget the meaning of the word inter alia.

Do share what other memory techniques you’re using. Until next time, this is Mohit signing off.
